FAQ
How long does it take to charge a Klever battery?
-It takes 3.5 hours to charge an 850 wh battery
-It takes 5 hours to charge a 1,200 wh battery
-It takes 6.7 hours to charge a 1,600 wh battery
Klever has different batteries, how many kilometres can I ride with them on the Klever Speed Pedelecs?
It is never possible to say exactly what the range of a battery is.
There are 3 factors of great influence:
-Cold: when it is cold outside, the battery's range is shorter
-the level of assistance: the pedal assistance has 3 positions: position 1, 2 and 3.
At setting 1 (light support, more powerful self-pedalling) the battery will naturally last longer than at setting 3, where you have maximum support from the motor and need to pedal much less forcefully yourself
-Driving conditions: wind against or uphill consumes more energy and this reduces range.
To give you an idea:
A 570 wh battery will get you between 30 and 90 km
An 850 wh battery will get you between 45 and 130 km
With a 1,200 wh battery: get between 70 and 200 km
With a 1,600 wh battery: get between 95 and 250 km
Our 1,600 wh battery is the largest battery in the market, there is hardly any other brand with such a large battery.
But note that the kilometres mentioned are the maximum mileage achievable.
So if you go cycling in very cold weather, against the wind, with maximum assistance and pedal less vigorously yourself... you can well imagine that you are not going to reach this maximum range.
In more favourable conditions, you will achieve many more kilometres. You probably also understand, if you want to extend your range, cycle less on setting 3 and more on setting 1 and 2.
Should I completely discharge the battery before recharging it? Is that better for the battery?
This is not necessary. However, it is recommended to use the battery regularly and also charge it regularly. It has been shown that the capacity of speed pedelec batteries is negatively affected if they are used too little (i.e. not discharged and charged enough)
Important tip: turn off regeneration in winter
It is not desirable to charge the battery when it is freezing. The battery is even protected against charging in too cold conditions, it simply does not charge then.
So charging in winter is done indoors.
You can, of course, drive during frost.
But: important is to turn off regeneration.
Regeneration is that the bike brakes on the motor and the energy released in the process is charged back to the battery.
So you shouldn't have that when it's freezing. Therefore, turn off Regeneration in winter.
Check your user manual how to do that, all user manuals can be found on our website
What is the best temperature to charge a battery?
It is not wise to charge your battery in cold conditions, especially when it is freezing.
The battery is even protected against charging in too cold conditions. So if you are going to charge in winter, remove your battery from the Klever speed pedelec and take it indoors. Charging at room temperature is ideal.
If you don't fully charge your battery, does that extend its life? And how much should you charge at most and how do you do it?
The storage capacity of batteries or accumulators slowly decreases over the years, just think of your mobile phone. So it is important to make the best use of that battery capacity.
The klever batteries are tuned so that part of the battery capacity is reserved, to protect the battery. This makes your range more constant over the years.
So you don't have to set anything yourself, the Klever battery charges according to its ideal charging capacity (and that's not quite full)
What is the legislation around Speed Pedelecs in Belgium, regarding helmets and licence plates?
The legal Speed Pedelec rules in Belgium are:
you must be at least 16 years old
you must have at least a moped licence or a motorbike or car licence
wearing a bicycle helmet complying with EN1078 is compulsory
Upon receipt, the speed pedelec must be registered with the Vehicle Registration Department (DIV) and have a white/red number plate. Your Klever dealer will do that for you; that dealer is certified by the DIV to do so
a speed pedelec rides on a moped path or on the carriageway, as a speed pedelec rider you adhere to the traffic rules that apply to mopeds
No special insurance is required in Belgium for a vehicle with pedal assistance (even at over 25 km/h). Family BA (Civil Liability) insurance is then sufficient. If a vehicle can propel autonomously without pedal assistance above the speed of 25 km/h, then a third-party moped insurance is required
What is the legislation around Speed Pedelecs in the Netherlands, regarding helmets and licence plates?
The legal Speed Pedelec rules in the Netherlands are:

On a 45km/h bike, should you also ride 45km/h?
You determine your own desired speed at all times, based on your pedalling power, the gear you choose and the support mode of your speed pedelec.
Like any bicycle, a speed pedelec has gears. With the Klever speed pedelecs, there are 10.
You choose the gear you like: do you like a bit heavier pedalling and fewer revolutions or lighter pedalling and more revolutions?
In addition, the speed pedelec has 3 modes of support: mode 1, 2 and 3.
1 is the lowest support, 2 medium and 3 the most powerful support.
To cycle 45 km/h, you will need mode 3 and use a reasonably heavy gear.
What is a speed pedelec?
Speed pedelecs are distinguished from traditional electric bikes by their higher speed capacity.
Speed pedelecs are electric bikes that go really fast.
While most regular e-bikes stick around 25 km per hour, speed pedelecs can reach speeds of up to 45 km per hour.
This makes it possible to cover significantly longer distances in a shorter time.
And you can get to your destination much faster, without breaking a sweat.
Because of that high speed of 45 km/h, speed pedelecs are considered mopeds in the Benelux, and specific rules apply to them.
One such rule is that you must have a licence plate on your speed pedelec.
This is necessary so that your bike is registered and recognisable in traffic, just as it is for mopeds and scooters (as well as cars).
The number plate also helps enforce traffic rules (you can be recognised as a road user).
In addition, having a number plate also requires you to have compulsory third-party insurance.
These rules make using speed pedelecs safer for you and for other road users.

Which geometric shapes are important in cycling?
The most important geometric shapes are your frame height and handlebar height. The distance from your saddle to your handlebars is also important for your posture and comfort on your bike.
How does geometry affect my pedelec?
The influence of geometry on an electric bike is different for everyone. Geometry affects your posture and comfort on the bike. Every person has certain requirements for a seating position and comfort, this is personally and individually different.
Which geometric shape suits me?
The geometric shape determines the model of the bike. Which model of bike suits you depends on many factors. The best way to find out is to visit a Klever dealer. They will be able to advise you personally. You can also go to any Klever dealer for a free test ride to try out different models.
