Speed pedelecs in traffic
A speed pedelec goes up to 45 km/h. That is faster than normal (electric) bikes, which go max 25 km/h. Therefore, according to the road, speed pedelecs fall under the category mopeds.
But where are you allowed or required to ride your speed pedelec? Are you allowed to ride on the carriageway or the cycle path? What is allowed and what should be?
- The main rule is: you ride on a bicycle/bicycle path.
- If there is no bicycle/moped path, you ride on the regular carriageway.
- So you are not allowed to ride on a path that is only a bicycle path. In that case, you ride on the carriageway.
Road signs
If only bicycles are really allowed on a cycle path, this is indicated as follows.
Cycling on the carriageway
If you see these road signs, you are cycling on the carriageway with your speed pedelec.
Cycling on the bike-moped path
If mopeds and speed pedelecs are also allowed on a bicycle path, you will see these traffic signs and thus cycle on this bicycle-moped path
